"On 'Xtra Cosmos", Brunelle's 5th full length, he has achieved a major step forward in forging a unique style which blends the mysticism of George Harrison and Nick Drake with the emotional (and sometimes instrumental) heaviness of Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith. The music is built around intricate hooks and chord progressions, anchored by Brunelle's virtuosic guitar work and honest vocals. Eschewing stylistic tropes or a dominant textural aesthetic, production serves each song individually, although the blend of clean electric and acoustic rhythm guitars quickly feels familiar on the album. The artist also played drums, bass, and keyboards, making this his most ambitious work so far. These songs chronicle a search for meaning in the midst of a long battle with undiagnosed depression and schizophrenia. The lyrics contain both appeals to the spirit, and personal truths learned from interactions with it in others, in nature, and in the self. In an era of kitsch and cleverness, Brunelle firmly believes in the power of earnest music to communicate and heal, and has imbued the work with his most caring and positive energy."
